Pillow Q & A Next
What size pillows should I buy?
Pillows come in standard, queen and king sizes. Some have a higher loft than others. When sizing a pillow to fit you, look at the loft first. Stomach sleepers tend to prefer a lower loft, softer pillow. Side and back sleepers tend to prefer a higher loft, firmer pillow. Spend time comfort testing your new pillow, in your natural comfort position.
My neck is stiff in the morning; do I need a new mattress?
Maybe not. Depending on your natural comfort position, you may be sleeping on a pillow which isn’t at the proper loft for your personal sleep style.
I can get two pillows for $10 at the discount store, why should I buy your expensive pillows?
A pillow isn’t something you just lay your head on at night; it should support your head and neck while providing a complete comfort solution in conjunction with your mattress. The pillow selection you will find at Mattress Giant is designed to help you find the best pillow to go along with your newly purchased mattress set.
How often should I replace my pillows?
You should always be guided by the support, feel and hygienic environment of your pillow. Pillows which have been protected should be replaced about every 3 years. Pillows which haven’t been protected should be replaced about 1.5 years.

How do I know when it’s time to replace my pillow?
If you find yourself smashing, bending, kneading or scrunching your pillow in order to find a comfortable sleep position, it’s time to consider purchasing a new pillow.
My back is sore in the morning; do I need a new mattress?
That is a possibility. However, consider replacing your pillow before purchasing a new mattress set. If you’ve purchased a new mattress in the past 3 – 5 years, chances are your pillow isn’t supporting your head, neck and shoulders properly.
Will my old pillows work with my new mattress?
Pillows wear out, just as our mattresses do. As our bodies change, so do our comfort requirements. Always consider purchasing new pillows to go with your fresh, new mattress set.
I sleep hot, should I avoid foam pillows?
Most types of foams displace air effectively, allowing the pillow to “breath”. If you sleep hot naturally, consider a latex pillow. If you need a firmer pillow, be sure to consider the wide variety of memory foam or TempurPedic pillows designed to support your head and neck.

How do I protect my pillow from stains and allergens?
A safe and hygienic sleep environment is accomplished by keeping your pillows free of allergens affecting how you sleep and breathe at night or when you wake up in the morning. Your head releases more heat than your body does, causing additional sweat to penetrate your pillow, increasing dust mite build up. Many sleepers drool, sneeze, or cough at night which will cause additional build up of dust mite activity in your pillows. The best way to provide a hygienic sleep environment for your new or existing pillows is to cover every pillow with a pillow protector.
How do I know which type of pillow is best for me?
Try several different types of pillows based on your natural comfort position: higher or lower loft, firmer or softer feel, contour or comfort pillow. You spend 1/3 of your life in bed; your pillow is a key component to a complete comfort solution.
What makes a pillow firmer or softer?
Some foams have a more plush feel, while others are firmer. Some pillows have more natural fibers or synthetic fibers than others. Some pillows are combination of all of these. Be sure you identify how you sleep at night before reaching for a pillow to comfort test. The best pillow for you is the one which feels most comfortable in conjunction with your mattress set.
Can’t I just wash my pillow to keep it clean?
In some cases, yes. However, once you wash a pillow in the washing machine and then toss it in the dryer, you’ll find that it never feels the same again. With a pillow protector, you simply wash the protector as you do the bed linens. This in turn allows your pillow to feel the same night after night. Next Previous

I’m allergic to some foams and natural fibers, which pillows should I avoid?
Most foams are considered contact allergens, meaning that the foam has to actually touch your skin to cause an allergic reaction. The foams used in our pillows are “washed” during processing to remove as many allergens as possible from the product. As for natural fibers, we offer options which give you the same feel as down or other natural fibers, in order to give you the comfort level you want. Our goal is to provide comfort options for all types of sleepers. Ultimately, you must decide which pillow is right for you.

| Pillow Selection Tips |
Tips for selecting the right pillow for YOU!
- Know what type of pillow you sleep on currently: comfort pillow, contour pillow, high loft, low loft, firm or soft feel, foam, down or natural fibers.
- Always consider trying different pillow styles. There have been advancements in designing new pillows for more comfort and durability.
- Identify your natural comfort position – stomach, side, back or a combination of these three. Remember, the position you fall asleep in may be different than the position you wake up in.
- First choose a pillow which is recommended for your personal sleep style. Try the pillow in each of the comfort positions you sleep in at night.
- Stomach sleepers gravitate towards lower loft and softer pillows to reduce the arch in their lower back.
- Back sleepers gravitate towards firmer pillows with a medium loft to help keep proper spinal alignment.
- Side sleepers gravitate towards a medium feel pillow with a little higher loft to help keep proper postural alignment.
- If a pillow you’re trying isn’t comfortable, proactively step up the pillow display and pick out another pillow.
- If you choose a firmer mattress, you may need a less firm pillow than you have used in the past. If you choose a plusher mattress, you may need a firmer pillow than you have used in the past.
- Consider replacing your pillows at least every three years, if you are using a pillow protector. Every one and a half years if you aren’t using a pillow protector.

If you choose to continue sleeping on your existing pillow, be sure to protect it, along with all of your pillows, by using a pillow protector.

Foundation vs. Boxspring
Foundations and Boxsprings are both designed to support and extend the life of your new bed set. Foundations often provide a firmer feel overall, and are designed to provide a stable base for one sided mattresses. Semi flex foundations work the same way, only they provide a small amount of spring back to the mattress. Boxsprings act as a "shock absorber" for the mattress, providing a greater level of comfort, while allowing more "give" back to your mattress.

Standard
A standard foundation refers to the manufacturer’s normal height foundation. Foundation heights can vary from one manufacturer to the next, but are typically 9" tall.

Low Profile
A low profile foundation provides the same support as a standard foundation but has a shorter height, usually 5" tall. Using a low profile foundation when combined with a taller mattress can bring the total height down to an average mattress set height.

Micro or Bunkie Board
A micro foundation, or Bunkie board, provides support to your mattress with today’s platform and specialty beds which may need additional support across the surface area of the mattress. A micro foundation is typically 2" tall.
|
| |
Split
Split foundations are commonly used for full or queen sized beds when the foundation must be moved through narrow hallways and tricky doorways. This tends to be a problem in older buildings and homes.
|

PowerBase Foundations
If you purchase an "Adjustable Friendly" mattress, this foundation will give you comfort options not available with conventional foundations. Being able to move your head and feet into different comfort positions, while getting a massage, will provide many more nights of restful sleep.
